My Journey to Psychiatry

I was born into a family of physicians, in a small Indiana town where my parents, first-generation immigrants, instilled in me hard work, compassion, and a deep sense of purpose. From the beginning, there was an expectation that I would one day follow in my father’s footsteps, as he had followed his own father, and the father before him. But I was headstrong, determined to forge my own path.

At Barnard College, Columbia University, I pursued political science and economics, imagining a future far from the world of medicine. Yet life, with its twists and quiet truths, called me back. Through grief, loss, and a profound curiosity about the human mind, I found my way to psychiatryβ€”not by tradition, but by conviction.

My path was shaped by personal experiences: navigating mental illness in my own family, the ache of loss, and the desire to heal suffering so often unseen. After earning my medical degree at Indiana University, I trained in general psychiatry at Northwestern, specializing in psychodynamic therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, and psychopharmacology. A fellowship in child and adolescent psychiatry at the University of Illinois, Chicago, deepened my understanding of resilience and vulnerability.

An unexpected chapter took me to New Zealand, where I worked with indigenous Māori communities and learned how culture and connection are essential to healing. Returning to the U.S., I served underserved communities in Los Angeles County, rediscovering holistic medicine, earning board certification in Integrative Medicine, and delving into Maharishi Ayurveda.

Today, I draw from these experiences to treat the whole personβ€”mind, body, and spirit. My practice blends science and compassion, honoring each patient’s story and helping them uncover their own strength, path, and healing.
